Monsters

(Frightfest Day 2)
Not the crazy FX laden madness I was expecting, more a magnificently understated road movie built around the fragile relationship that forms between the two leads.
Furthermore when the creatures do make their fleeting appearances it's like a Lovecraft rendition of Jurassic Park that effortlessly assuages any disappointment that may have formed.

  1. Sorry to say my disappointment was not assauged. This was not what I wanted from Frightfest - a road movie romance, albeit well-played, that won't live long in my memory.

Part Jurassic Park, part Mist, part Apocalypse now - decidedly less than the sum of its parts. Great cinematography though.

  2. I got so pissed off that Cineworld didn't get this (even after I'd seen the trailer a few times) I found a DVD rip and downloaded it. And I was disappointed. Very disappointed. Disappointed that I couldn't give my money to such an abitious, interesting and very good film.

For 90 minutes I thought it was absolutely fantastic and then the problem. It ended, just like that. I suppose I should really commend it for refusing to contrive a typical finale and what there was was kinda interesting (I never expected that kinda of climax; nudge nudge wink wink). But the two leads just being yanked apart with no closure did give me the instant impression of "is that it?".

Still, great central relationship, fantastic cinematography, ace monsters and brilliant atmosphere made me wish I'd given them money.
