Frightfest 2012 Reflection

Another 23 films across 5 days and this time it wasn't the shock to the system that last year was.

As well as the films we also saw Ross Noble miming the picking up of an orphan by slotting a testicle into its emptied eye socket, we saw Alex Garland get increasingly uncomfortable as he struggled to answer simple questions about Dredd ("How did you choose the director?", "um... er.... fuck...") and we saw Simon Pegg ram his nose so far up Greg Nicotero's ass it's a wonder that Nicotero was able to walk afterward.

Dario Argento's hour long interview on the Friday meandered between unintelligent Italian mumbling and softly spoken scathing comments (on the Suspiria remake: "they think they can do better? Let them try"), it's a terrible shame he didn't bring a film with him but to see him have a stumbling natter was (occasionally) illuminating none the less. It's a shame the Q&A at the end descended into passive-aggressive attention seeking mingled with unashamed arse snogging. With tongues if they could.

Nearly every film this year had cast and crew in attendance, which meant nearly every film had an audience Q&A at the end, which in turn meant nearly every film had some idiot flapping their useless jaws and allowing the baffling bullshit that should really be kept inside their little heads to just flow out. One chap stepped up at the end of The Seasoning House and proclaimed "It was unconvincing. Any chance of a recut?" What a prick.

The short film showcase was once again superb. The best was Gargols, a Spanish short about an invasion of giant snails. There was also telekinetic children, tentacles and heavy metal demons on offer. Probably the most memorable moment (for all the wrong reasons) is when a man a few rows back had a seizure just as, on screen, a lady was sewing her mimsy shut. He had to be taken away in an ambulance.

And the films. After a slow start the quality really began to pick up. The programming order was a touch odd (2 comedies and a film about rape for opening night), and the amount of rape featured in the films caused twitter voices to get shrill despite the fact that there were only really 2 films that went down that route. Nobody got angry about the amount of times we had to watch male genitalia get torn off and then dangled in our face though, there's equality working a treat.
However the biggest surprise to be had this weekend was that the best film we saw was a remake. Lists:

5 favourites;
1) Maniac [2012 Remake]
2) American Mary
3) Tulpa
4) V/H/S
5) Sinister

5 not favourites;
1) After
2) Outpost II: Black Sun
3) Dead Sushi [Deddo sushi]
4) Stitches
5) The Possession

Thanks to Ali, Joe and Ted for keeping the migraines in check. More next year?

  1. Really loved it. If I can keep the migraines at bay and my Tulpa in my trousers, I'm definitely up for next year. And pencil me in for the queue
    1) Maniac
    2) Tulpa
    3) American Mary
    4) Sleep Tight
    5) Berbarian Sound Studio (it's stuck in the mind! Just edged VHS)

  2. And the worst - ho ho
    1) After. Nope, still can't think of a worse film. How many people must've been involved in this? Did no-one say anything? Still glad I walked out.
    2) Outpost 2. Bad. That is all.
    3) Chained. Everyone seemed to love this! I found it simultaneously unbearable and unconvincing.
    4) Dead Sushi. I may have liked it if I was 12 and Japanese, but probably not even then.
    5) Cockneys v Zombies. Yeah, worse than nightbreed

Right, it's a nice sunny afternoon in Aberdeen and I've just knocked off work. Think I'll sit in a darkened room, drink white wine and watch lots of argento

  3. Next year for sure. Loved FF 2012 - the films, the company, the mad dashes to the Comedy Pub.

My top 5 - honourable mentions to Paura 3D and Sinister (I share others' reservations about the shhshhing kids, but the demon in the wire is pretty terrifying):

    1 - Maniac
    2 - V/H/S
    3 - American Mary
    4 - Sleep Tight
    5 - Chained

Bottom 5 - not surprisingly, bottomed out by the truly abysmal After. Dishonourable mention to Rec 3, which despite being competently made, annoyed me greatly in its abject silliness. Nevertheless, it was still out-stunk by:

    1 - After
    2 - Dead Sushi
    3 - Nightbreed
4 - Hidden in the Woods
    5 - Grabbers

As for the SCARIEST, that's limited to a list of two for me: V/H/S (by some margin) and Sinister. "I Like You"-girl freaked me the fuck out...

  4. Yesterday morning I was seriously considering the sanity of spending four days watching horror due to insane levels of disconnection from reality! I'm feeling (predictably) somewhat recovered now, and must confess last night I did fancy sticking on a horror film!

But all things considered, I'd definitely do it again!

    The best:

    1 - Maniac
    2 - Sleep Tight
    3 - V/H/S
    4 - Chained
    5 - Rec 3

    The worst:

1 - Hidden in the Woods
    2 - After
    3 - Outpost 2
    4 - Paura 3D
    5 - Nightbreed Cabal Cut

Scariest award goes to Sinister (before it went drama school).
Most Harrowing award goes to Chained.

Non-film related best moment of the festival? The rise of 'two drinks' Odber, and the ever earlier starting time from which those two beverages first appeared. Good job FF isn't a 6 day festival or I imagine Joe would have lapped his own drinking hours!

I challenge all to watch Frightfest 14 stone cold sober - i'm convinced the experience is much much harsher that way!

  5. Stone cold sober I'll put down as plan B. Plan A would be taking in my own supply of little bottles. Or maybe just a box of wine and a tube.

Chained seems to have been the movie which has split us most - the only one to make our best and worst lists.

Those Total Film lists were a bit weird. How can your best and worst not even mention Maniac and After?

  6. Yes the Total Film lists seem very odd, my guess is they're compelled to big up certain films as they're an ass kissing magazine that needs to make money, and similarly to ignore certain disasters for fear of getting snubbed.

  7. Rec 3 divided us too, it only just missed out on my worst list. Also, Paura 3D was close to being in my best list but was in Ali's worst. I was so-so about including Chained in my top 5 - I felt the twist made it a good, but flawed film, where it could have been brilliant.

Looking forward to next year's fest already! Pity the Halloween thing isn't in London or I'd probably go to that.
